The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust
Northwick Park Dental Education Centre offers world class dental courses from its base at Northwick Park Hospital and was a new build joint enterprise between the LNWH Trust and the NHS London Deanery.
This project consisted of IT & AV Provision for the new Dental Education Centre Clinical Skills Lab and Control Room.
Clinical Skills Lab
Provision needed to be made for a solution for 13 Student Seat positions and one Tutor Station.
The Tutor Station needed to have the functionality to send AV feeds from various sources to all or selected TFT monitors positioned at each Student seat and a Seminar Room situated nearby if required.
The AV Sources must include –
– Tutor Station PC
– Desk Mounted Visualiser
– Dental Microscope
– Live Feed from other IP cameras mounted on the premises
– Desk Mounted Intra/Extra Oral Camera
– LCD Touch Tablet
All Students must also be able to access the internet plus digital images and files stored centrally on the main sites network.
The room would have dual purpose as an observational post for the adjoining teaching room.
The solution was to create a facility that can record and edit live training footage from the room which will then be uploaded as e-learning content to be accessed by students on the main website.
Adaptive IT's Solution
Clinical Skills Room:
An Extron matrix AV switch was deployed which gave all functionality required in terms of the distribution of all feeds to student positions and the Seminar Room. The selection of and forward direction of the feeds was governed by the Tutor using a touch screen interface.
A High End Dell PC and large format TFT Screen was supplied for Tutor usage and a connection point to be used by visiting delegates with Laptops also installed.
All Student positions were equipped with a 19″ Dell TFT and a Small Form Factor XP embedded PC to facilitate internet connection and connection to communally stored materials.
A bespoke switching solution was used to give functionality to switch between Tutor and own PC feeds.
A high end Camera was wall mounted to be used to capture the live footage created by the presenter with a professional background green screen for overlaying content. Scripts were created using specialist software and displayed on an auto cue cited above the camera teamed with a viewing screen for the recorded image to be seen by the presenter in real time.
Once suitable content was recorded, editing software was utilized to shape and model the footage into a coherent piece ready for presentation and upload onto the e-learning site.
As with all new builds there were a number of trades onsite but with the niche specialisms of the equipment being installed, it placed even greater pressure on making sure the project kept to schedule. This was achieved successfully and the project delivered ready for the first intake of students when the facility opened.
After training was given to the in-house Technical Staff for the onsite management going forward, a full telephone helpdesk and remote maintenance contract was in place for the first year of operation.
